Your body is not an animal that needs to be tamed.
Almost every tradition I have studied, and most of the discipline teaching that runs through business today, agrees on one picture of the body. The body is the animal. The mind is the rider. The work is to tame the animal: wake it earlier, feed it less, push it harder, and make it obey. I understand why the picture is attractive, because it produces results for a while, and it puts you in charge. It also limits the potential of where the body can take you.
Most leaders I work with have managed their body like a resource for twenty years.
They schedule it, fuel it, push it through the quarter, and repair it on vacation. When it slows down, they read that as weakness and add willpower. Last week I wrote about what happens when the body finally speaks louder than the schedule, and I know many of you recognized the stiffness in the shoulders, the Sunday night stomach, the two in the morning waking up with thoughts. This week is about what the body actually is, because once you see it, you stop taming it and start operating it.
Your body is a quantum computer.
I say that as someone who spent eighteen years building computing systems for the world's largest companies. In 1994 a mathematician solved a problem in a test tube using strands of DNA as the processor, and a single gram of DNA can hold about 215 million gigabytes. Your cells do not only store information. They compute with it. Proteins inside every cell run logic, and cells talk to each other through electrical signals to decide what to build and what to repair. Your gut carries about five hundred million neurons of its own, your heart about forty thousand, and most of the fibers in the nerve that joins them to your brain run upward, from the body to the head. What you have been calling a gut feeling is the body reporting before the mind has finished its sentence, and the research shows that people who lose that signal decide badly even when their reasoning is intact. You were born with the system already in you that supports your consciousness, your spiritual development, and the maturation of who you are, wired to pull who you are at the highest level into this world and create what you came here for. It is a communication device and a computer at the same time, receiving and computing in one system, which is why last week's letter about the body as the messenger and this one are the same subject seen from two sides. It is the most sophisticated technology you will ever operate, and it is more advanced than anything I helped build.
Nothing about that needs taming. It needs to be operated the way it was built to run.
