I watched my wealthiest clients and found one thing that is different, and it is not a strategy. I call it "of course" energy.
Of course I can do it. Of course it would be great. Of course I get to make this. Of course it came, and of course there is more. Money arrives and nothing in them tightens around it, because the identity it belongs to is already in place. The energy came before the money, and it is the reason the money came.
What taught me was how they carried possibility, a baseline they never thought to question, the way I trust the sun will rise tomorrow.
I want to be honest about what watching them did to me. In my own life of devotion, what I experience of God is abundance itself, constant expansion, creation opening into dimensions I cannot even fathom. And what I kept receiving in that connection is that we carry the same essence, that the light it all comes from is the light we are made of. For years, that registered in me as truth. Watching them simply live it was another story. That is when I finally knew it, the way you know something in your body. They were showing me what the same essence looks like with nothing in the way. In every other way they were as human as anyone I work with; the same essence is in all of us.
Originally, we are big, with so much power and abundance in us. Every one of us was given that identity early, in the resemblance of the Creator. And it was never lost, which is why it can be lived out by anyone.
In 2010, Oprah asked J.K. Rowling, who by then was the most successful author in the world, whether she had finally come to trust that all of it would always be there. Rowling told the truth. The worry was still with her, and some part of her stayed terrified of pressing the wrong button and losing everything she had built. The most accomplished writer alive, still running on the very same fear she carried at the bottom.
Oprah came up from her own kind of poverty and has always described the opposite in herself. In her words: "I never feared not having it." That is of course energy, spoken plainly.
I learned this in my own life long before I taught it to anyone.
For a long time, I could achieve almost anything I could think of. Holding it was the harder skill, and the one I had to learn. The achieving came from drive and effort, from the part of me that pushes. The holding needed to come from trust: that I deserved it, and that I got to keep what I earned, created, and achieved.
A person can want the next level with everything in her and fear at the same time. Those two pulls run in polar opposite directions, canceling the energy out, and the effort doubles into exhaustion while the result holds still.
There is a question almost nobody says out loud, and it decides everything: do I get to have this?
